Session C2:
Breaking Away from CourseWorks: Alternatives to Learning Management Systems

Dan Beeby
2:00 PM - 3:15 PM

This session looked at the range of web resources that offer richer, more unique functionality than what is available with existing learning management systems, such as CourseWorks. During the session, numerous free or low-cost options were explored, many of which feature user-friendly designs that can lead to quick adoption in the classroom. Demonstrations highlighted services that have been implemented at Columbia, such as Wikispaces and WordPress (EdBlogs). Most of these web resources offer portability beyond the student's course time and permit individuals from outside the university to participate in the course. Drawbacks, such as privacy and assessment issues, were also discussed alongside potential gains from having students become familiar with tools they will likely use beyond their college years.
