The SMART Board SB685ix is a 87" touch-screen, front-projection display that works with a networked computer, or DVD. If you would like to hook up your personal laptop to the SMART Board, download the SMART Board Software.
Audio-Visual equipment
A DVD unit is available in the equipment rack under the screen. The DVD Player can also play Audio CDs. The computer connected to the SMART Board also has a DVD/CD player that the instructor may use. Both DVD Players are regionalized to play DVDs from North America (region 1) and may not be able to play DVDs from other regions.
Classroom Computer
Attached to the SMART Board is an Apple Mac mini Core2Duo computer that has been configured to run Mac OS X or Windows 7. The computers is configuration is:
- CPU: 64Bit 2.4 GHz Dual Core Processor
- Memory: 4 GB RAM
- Disk drive: Windows 80 GB ; Mac 80GB
- Optical drive: Superdrive, DVD/CD reader and burner
- Adesso Wireless Keyboard with built-in trackpad
- Ethernet: 100 Mb
The EDC computer is a dual-boot Mac mini that can run Mac OS X (10.6) or Microsoft Windows (7). To choose the computer's operating system, reboot while holding the option key.

Video conferencing capability
The Polycom VSX7000s and Visual Concert unit add video conferencing capability to the EDC. The Polycom VSX7000s is a video conferencing system that allows users to communicate clearly with another group via the Internet. The Visual Concert Unit allows the user to plug in a laptop or other peripheral so that presentations (i.e. Powerpoint, Video, Websites) can be used seamlessly within the video conference. The user has full camera, audio, and video/content switching control via a hand held remote.
The Polycom Video Conferencing System is ideal for:
- Distance Learning initiatives involving Columbia professors and students located at other institutions.
- Classroom implementation where students from Columbia University and another institution are taking the same course.
- Meetings with other institutions involved in similar technology-based educational initiatives.
Facilities for Students
For the convenience of students who may need to use a laptop during the class, the room is equipped with the Columbia University wireless and wired connections. Power outlets and floorboxes are located throughout the room.
