Q: I want to set up a site, but the semester has already started; can I still do this?

  • You may access and modify your courses any time. Normally, classes for subsequent semesters are available a couple of months before the beginning of classes.

Q: The courses I am teaching are not in my list on the MyCourses page in CourseWorks.

  • You must be listed as instructor for the course in the Directory of Classes. CourseWorks gets basic course information such as the instructor's name, room, and meeting time from the Directory. If you are listed in the Directory but the course is not in your list, ask your Department Administrator to ensure the Registrar has your name as it appears in the Personnel Information System, and your correct Social Security number, so course information is tied to your record correctly.

Q: The information in the Directory of Classes for one of my courses for next semester needs to be updated. What do I need to do?

Q: Is there any virus protection inside CourseWorks?

  • No. One way of avoiding viruses is to use your anti-virus software to scan any file you are planning to upload or download. If you don't have anti-virus software on your computer, you can download Symantec AntiVirus from CUIT at http://www.columbia.edu/acis/software/nav/

Q: If I post my notes on CourseWorks, does Columbia University get the copyright or does it remain with the instructor?

Q: My name is incorrect or I would like to remove my middle name from my CourseWorks account. How do I do this?

  • Please contact your departmental administrator or the CUIT Help Desk at 212-854-1919 to request a name change in the University's databases.

Q: Can I hide one of my past courses?

  • Yes. Instructors can "Archive" past courses, making them inaccessible to students. The "Archive Courses" link appears on the CourseWorks main page, after logging in.

Q: Can I embed YouTube videos into my CourseWorks site?

  • Yes. After copying the embed code from YouTube, you can embed videos into many different areas in your course: Sessions, Lectures, Assignments, Discussion Topics, and Email. If you require assistance, please call our Faculty Support Lab at 212-854-9058.

Q: Can I embed Google Docs into my CourseWorks site?

  • Yes. You can embed calendars, PowerPoint presentations, and spreadsheets into CourseWorks. If you require assistance, please call the CCNMTL Faculty Support Lab at 212-854-9058.
