'Pariah' is explained by the British colonial dictionary Hobson-Jobson as an English word derived from the name of a South Indian untouchable caste. The Imperial Gazetteer considers the caste of Pariahs or 'Paraiyan' to represent "the old Dravidian stock," racially distinct from the northern 'Aryans.'
