The third of the four hierarchically-organized Varnas in the Caste System. According to the Laws of Manu, "The Vaishya [the Lord commanded] to tend cattle, to bestow gifts, to offer sacrifices, to study (the Veda), to trade, to lend money, and to cultivate land" (I,90).
