Born in Bengal into a Brahmin family, Raja Ram Mohan Roy (1772-1833) was an early Western-influenced reformer who advocated a monotheistic form of Hindusim and denounced the caste system. He founded the Brahmo Samaj, an organization described in the Imperial Gazetteer .
