Matthew Arnold (1822-1888) was a Victorian poet and essayist. In his writing, Arnold struggled with his religious doubt and his conviction that humans were innately isolated beings. Dr. Ambedkar is quoting here from Arnold's poem Stanzas from the Grande Chartreuse, which discusses the Carthusians who adopted extremely austere forms of discipline.
