The land of the Five Rivers ('panj ab' in Persian) in the northwest part of the Subcontinent has traditionally been its fertile granary. It is also the religious home of Sikhs. The Punjab was one of the eight provinces of British India; its importance was such that the Imperial Gazetteer gives it very detailed attention. It naturally receives a Gazetteer map of its own.
