This southernmost British colonial Province was substantially larger than the whole United Kingdom, as the Imperial Gazetteer did not fail to point out. The Madras Presidency occupied the whole lower part of the southern peninsula, and required two Gazetteer maps to show it fully, one for the North part and one for the South part. Its capital city of Madras rated a city map of its own.
