A map of the Mourya, or Maurya, Empire (c.323-185 BCE) is provided by the New York Metropolitan Museum. The Imperial Gazetteer took a much more severe view of the period than did Dr. Ambedkar, who was surely thinking especially of the reign of Ashoka Maurya and his conversion to Buddhism (also described by the Imperial Gazetteer).
