Chapter 2

Note:

CE ("Common Era") refers to the most frequently used calendar system: the Gregorian Calendar. It has the same definition and value as AD ("Anno Domini", or "Year of the Lord" in Latin.) AD refers to the approximate birth year of Jesus Christ. To steer clearly of religious connotations and the likely inaccuracy of the historical record, scientists now replace "AD" with "CE," adapting as the arbitrary starting point for this enumeration of years the date of January 1, 01,CE decreed by the Gregorian Calendrical reforms.
