On August 6, 1945, the United States dropped an atomic bomb over the city of Hiroshima, Japan. Japan refused to surrender, and three days later (August 9) a second bomb was dropped over Nagasaki. By August 14 Japan had surrendered unconditionally, and World War II ended.
The Hiroshima bomb killed about 150,000 people; in Nagasaki about 200,000 perished. Many thousands survived with debilitating injuries and exposure to crippling doses of radiation.
