If the possible values ranged from 17.5 - 99 F, in increments of 0.5, you'll end up with (99 - 17.5) X 2 + 1 = 164 discrete points. The +1 is because we have a bin for 17.5 and another for 99, whereas the difference X 2 does not count both ends. How many whole numbers are there from 5 to 10 including 5 and 10: 5,6,7,8,9,10 or 6 = (10-5) + 1.
