Note:

At the end of the 18th Century, the widely accepted view was that "heat" consisted of a fluid called "caloric" that flowed into something as it got warmer and flowed out of it as it cooled. Count Rumford disproved this theory while engaged in one of his many different occupations as head of the Bavarian munitions factory.
