Transduction

Chapter 7

Note:

Transduce (literally, to carry across) is a verb used in physics to describe a transformation of one kind of motion, energy, or action into another. In this example, the microphone transduces the oscillating air molecules that constitute a sounds into a fluctuating electrical current, while the speaker tranduces this current (after being amplified) back into sound waves. The microphone uses a flexible membrane that vibrates in response to the incoming sound wave and is coupled to a magnet or an electric capcitor whose field it changes, inducing an electric current. The speaker works in reverse: in response to a changing electric current, the magnet's field changes, pushing and pulling on the membrane of the speaker.
