About Project Rebirth
Project Rebirth is a chronicle of the strength of the human spirit in coping with disaster: the aftermath of September 11, 2001 at the World Trade Center. Originating with a feature-length documentary by filmmaker Jim Whitaker, Project Rebirth combines the intimate stories of ten people coping post 9/11 with footage from the rebuilding of Ground Zero. The film represents the first long-term film record of people dealing with grief and trauma, and serves as the only living record of the development of the World Trade Center site. It will be a component of the National September 11 Memorial and Museum and archived in the Library of Congress. At Columbia University and Georgetown University, Project Rebirth is an initiative to engage faculty and students in the active use of film's extensive interview and reconstruction footage in order to fulfill the project's larger goal: to chronicle living history to inform and empower. Thanks to the courage and generosity of the ten interview subjects, we have a unique opportunity to expand the study of traumatic loss and the delivery of support for victims. Through the project, the university community will leverage its capacity to engage in thoughtful study and to train professionals to better understand and respond to the impact of the events surrounding 9/11 and its long-term effects on human lives, local communities, our society and culture, and our country's place in the world. Special Event: April 15, 2009 Learning from Disaster: Film and Understanding Our Resiliency will feature a 30-minute preview of the film and a conversation with filmmaker Jim Whitaker, Georgetown University President John J. DeGioia, and faculty from Columbia and Georgetown who are using the film to teach courses in a wide range of disciplines.
