Virtual Techniques in Dentistry (VirTechs) is a collection of dental procedures that can be used for practice and review of many of the procedures taught in the preclinical years. The videos can be viewed using a Web browser, in a standalone QuickTime player (normal size or full screen) or as enhanced video podcasts that are saved to your iTunes library. With all viewing options, the videos are indexed for easy access to the steps of each procedure. Additionally, a caption track is available to help students with difficult terminology and tools. (Captions are not available on podcasts.) Each procedure includes access to a transcript and full-color armamentarium descriptions.

This module demonstrates how to effectively clean a root canal. Although it is impossible to remove all the tissue from a root canal, the more that is removed during the cleaning and shaping process, the higher the success rate will be for the procedure.

Root Measurement (Unmounted Maxillary Central Incisor)

         <itunes:author>Columbia University</itunes:author>

This procedure demonstrates how to measure the length. The length of teeth in the mouth as well as among individuals is variable. An accurate measurement is necessary to insure proper cleaning of the root canal(s). The apex of a tooth is usually never at the end of that root, and the apices of roots are also variable in their position.

Maxilliary Central Wax-Up

         <itunes:author>Columbia University</itunes:author>

When waxing up an anterior tooth it is necessary to concentrate on esthetic value first and then later work on establishing function. This maxim is especially critical with the maxillary anterior teeth. In this procedure we will be do a complete wax-up of an interior incisor and align it with the adjacent teeth.

We have replaced the tooth #9 with a prepared tooth. The marginal outline extends all the way around the tooth from the labial to the lingual surfaces including the proximal surfaces. For demonstration purposes, we will outline the margins of the tooth with a darker color wax, and use tooth colored-wax to complete the wax-up of the coronal portion.
