In Persian, literally 'elder'; by extension, 'saint,' 'spiritual guide.' The term can refer to a variety of Sufi or other holy men, whether part of an organized lineage or independent, whether living or dead. The Imperial Gazetteer gives an example of the power of Pirs among one Afghan group.
