What did your eye go to first in this picture of stars in a small patch of sky? Probably it was the three stars in a straight line just to the lower left of center. Is this pattern meaningful? Not at all. The stars are completely unrelated to each other, are at very different distances, and are randomly scattered in this photograph. But your brain works to find patterns all the time, and so you find one here.
