Note:

The familiar subatomic particles that make up all the matter on Earth -- protons, neutrons, and electrons -- do so because they are stable; i.e., they live a long time (maybe forever). But most subatomic particles (and there are hundreds) have the most fleeting of existences, typically living for tiny fractions of a second before falling apart into some more basic form, ultimately ending up as electrons, neutrinos or light energy.
