Using the MSE
Viewing video
In order to view video you will need the free RealPlayer plug-in, version 7 or higher. To get the plug-in, download now, and look in the fine print for the "Free RealOne Player" link. Click on the link and follow the downloading instructions. Long download times (up to a half-hour) may be expected on a 56K modem.

It is not necessary or recommended that you purchase the premium versions of the RealPlayer plug-in that are featured on the RealPlayer site.

For more information please see Using the Real Player.

Video bandwidth options
We offer video with SureStream which will adjust to the speed of your connection. Over a 56K modem you may experience delays in the video image.

If you do have a high-speed connection (Cable, DSL, T1) and you still have problems playing video, it's possible that your RealPlayer preferences are set for a lower speed connection.

To easily change your settings, follow these steps:

RealOne Player

  1. Launch the RealPlayer application.
  2. From the menu, select "Tools" and then select "Preferences."
  3. In the "Category" window, select the "Connection" tab.
  4. From the pull-down menu titled "Normal Bandwidth," select the type of connection you are using.
  5. Click "OK."
  6. Close the RealPlayer application and try replaying the video in the MSE.
Previous RealPlayer applications
  1. Open the RealPlayer application.
  2. From the menu, select "View," and then select "Preferences."
  3. In the "Preferences" window, select the "Connection" tab.
  4. From the pull-down menu titled "Normal Bandwidth," select the type of connection you are using.
  5. Click "OK."
  6. Close the RealPlayer application and try replaying the video in the MSE.
Note: Some factors that cause video and audio instability are not related to connection speed settings (e.g., high traffic over the internet may cause "congestion" and decreased connection speed).

Troubleshooting

Plug-in error messages
If you cannot view a video, slide show, interactive, or PDF, you will receive a plug-in error. You will need to download the appropriate plug-in. Please select one of these options to be taken to more detailed help information: RealPlayer Video

Making a page load faster
Downloading files and viewing pages mostly depends on your modem's connection speed. You might want to try logging on when fewer people are online—such as late at night or early in the morning. Also, faster computers will be able to display and run applications quicker. If your machine seems to be having problems or you experience delays running Netscape Navigator 4.x, you may want to download Internet Explorer 5.x/6.x (PC) or 5.x (Mac). As a general rule, Internet Explorer is less memory-intensive than Netscape Navigator.

RealOne login prompt

  1. Start the RealOne Player.
  2. In the "Media Browser" window, select the menu "Tools" and the "Preferences" option.
  3. Set "On Startup Display" pull-down menu to "Player only (no Media Browser)."
  4. Select "OK."

Using Netscape
The Netscape browser is free. Download the latest version of Netscape and follow the simple download instructions.

We don't recommend Netscape 6 as it represents a major departure from previous Netscape browsers. As such, the web pages may not display as intended. These problems should not occur with earlier (e.g., Netscape 4.7) or later versions (e.g., Netscape 7).
