During slavery blacks with the lightest skin color were often the children of the enslaver and the women he held in bondage. Tensions developed when it was observed that light-skinned blacks received better treatment for keeping darker skinned blacks in line. For many Black Nationalists, this represented the basis for explaining the bitter tensions and divisions that remained in place long after attaining freedom. -- EB
