White Scarved, white gowned Muslim sisters

Women in the Nation of Islam were expected to conform to a rigid dress code that emhpasized modesty. This code included covering one's hair with headpieces and wearing long, ankle-length dresses. At rallies and other official gatherings, women were required to wear white headpieces and gowns. A Muslim woman's attire was to match her demure, gracious and obedient disposition. The uniform of the Muslim sisters often contrasted sharply with the streetwear of non-Muslim women, who at various times embraced less "modest" styles such as the miniskirt and halter top.
