In the latter decades of the Nation of Islam's existence, Elijah Muhammad spoke to his followers about obtaining a separate country in which African-Americans could govern themselves. This is in keeping with nationalist goals and practices. The possibility of acquiring territory in one of several southern states large enough for his membership was discussed but a specific site was not named. His plan was to develop businesses, farms and other self-help projects.
