Prevalence of Black Muslims owning their own stores

note <

Part of the Nation Of Islam's economic philosophy of Black determination was the ownership and operation of businesses and other ventures. The goal is to keep the money circulating within the Black community rather than taking one's hard earned money and spending it outside the Black community which would have no impact on the accumulation of Black wealth. Black businesses would also play an integral role in creating employment opportunities without the disadvantage of having to face institutional racism in hiring practices, which was common during the era that Malcolm is referring to. This economic philosophy is coupled with a social philosophy that also promotes self-determination within the Black community. Malcolm and the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. They felt that rather than trying to force Blacks into a society that already disliked them, that Blacks should try to eliminate some of the ills and defects endemic to African American experience.
