Founded in 1909, the Amsterdam News is the oldest Black-owned newspaper in the United States. It remained one of the leading Black weeklies for most of the twentieth century. The newspaper has historically focused on presenting news of the African American community. As such, the paper has traditionally been a venue for Black leaders, including Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., New York's first Black Congressman, and Malcolm X who, with the support of editor James Hicks, ran a column called "God's Angry Men" in 1958 before the space was ceded to Elijah Muhammad. The Amsterdam News had been one of the few newspapers to carry the story of the Johnson Hinton case, and it thus helped spread the word about the Nation of Islam.
