More formally known as Dr. Betty Shabazz (formerly known as Betty Sanders) was born in 1936 in Detroit. She attended Tuskegee University before moving to New York to become a nurse. She also becomes interested in and joins the Nation of Islam.She begins to teach at Temple No. 7 where she meets Malcolm. Malcolm proposes and they are soon married. They have six daughters together before Malcolm's untimely death. After Malcolm's death Betty continues her education, eventually obtaining her doctorate in education from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. In 1976 she joined the faculty of Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, NY as an associate professor of health administration. Shabazz died in 1997 from burns received during a fire set in her home.
