Charles Eric Lincoln (1924-2000) was a renowned author of more than twenty books and a leading scholar of Black religious life. The book that Malcolm X is referring to, Black Muslims in America, would become Lincoln's signature work along with The Black Church in the African-American Experience. These works served to highlight the importance of race in the religious life of the U.S. and the significance of the church in the political life of the Black community. These issues were central concerns of Malcolm's and have been treated by a number of scholars since that time.
