Orson Welles

note <

"Orson Welles frightened America with a radio program describing . . . an invasion by 'men from Mars'" - The incident that Malcolm is alluding to occurred on October 30, 1938 as a result of a television program based on the H.G. Wells novel War of the Worlds. That evening's broadcast took on the format of a simulated live news broadcast announcing that invaders from Mars had attacked a small town in New Jersey. Thousands of listeners that didn't realize the broadcast was a simulation became immediately panic-stricken. Orson Welles (1915-1985) was an acclaimed actor who went on to direct the landmark film - Citizen Kane.
