The Police Athletic League was founded in 1914 by Captain John Sweeney in New York City. PAL's programs aim to "provide year round recreational, educational, and cultural after school and evening programs for girls and boys." PAL's philosophy "is to provide a climate in which each child can develop according to his or her own needs, interests and skills." These leagues are located in underserved neighborhoods to offer a safe and friendly environment. PAL has grown so much since its inception that there is now a league in every city.
