Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe (1904-1966), know by many as simply "Zik," was a Nigerian nationalist and statesman. After advanced studies in political science in the United States, Azikiwe founded a chain of news-papers in Nigeria and led a general strike. A key leader in the struggle for Nigerian independence, he became the first president of the Republic of Nigeria in 1963. Deposed in 1966 via a military coup, Azikiwe has worked as an academic and a political advisor for the younger political leaders of Nigeria.
