Mosques are the Muslim houses of worship. Originally known as "temples," Elijah Muhammad directed that they be called mosques after returning from a trip to Mecca in 1959. Mosques were the cultural centers of the Nation of Islam. They were the sites of the weekly sermons, men's and women's classes, and other meetings Muslims regularly attended.
