Founded in 1839, Boston University was initially the Methodist Theological School in Vermont. It moved to its current location, Boston, in 1867. Notable alumni came to include Martin Luther King, Jr., who began his doctoral studies in theology there in 1951 and was awarded his Ph.D. in 1955.
