Jim VandeHei was born, raised, and attended college in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He covered sports for his hometown newspaper and ran the Brillion News , a Wisconsin weekly, in the summer of 1993. VandeHei got his start in political journalism after moving to Washington, DC, in 1995. He covered the GOP Congressional majority for Roll Call , then moved to the Wall Street Journal , where he covered Congress and the White House. In 2002, he moved to the Washington Post , where he continued to cover Congress, as well as the 2004 campaign and the White House.

VandeHei and wife Autumn lived in Falls Church, Virginia, with their two children.
