Born into a distinguished family of Bengal, Debendranath Tagore (1817-1905) followed in the footsteps of Raja Ram Mohun Roy in advocating a purified, monotheistic, caste-free form of Hinduism. As noted in the Imperial Gazetteer, he was a pillar of the Brahmo Samaj.
