The Police Scanner

Listen carefully to the police scanner to find out if an important fire occurs, one that you'll need to cover. The dispatcher talks quickly and in code, so you need to pay close attention. The two most important codes in Freeport are 12-77 (5-alarm fire) and 12-75. Keep your list of codes handy as a reference tool.

Click on the picture of the scanner to start listening. Listen closely, take notes and make sure you get the address of the fire. Without the address, you'll have no idea where to go.

If you hear a fire that you think you need to cover, immediately call the city editor and make sure he agrees before you head out into the field.

Remember that there are many events that might involve the police, fire or other emergency personnel in a city of Freeport's size, and not all of them are worth covering. But those that are worth covering need your attention and fast.

Finally, note that the codes used in Freeport are unique to Freeport. There is no single set of codes used throughout the U.S. You'll need to learn which codes matter in each town and what those codes refer to.

You decide:
I want to call the City Editor.
I want to call in the story and cover it.
This story isn't worth covering.
I'm leaving to go cover this story right now!
