Using Intelligent Interactive Media to Revolutionize the Online Learning Experience

W. Lewis Johnson, Director, Center for Advanced Research in Technology for Education (CARTE) at the University of Southern California Information Sciences Institute will be the virtual presenter at the final seminar session this academic year. Dr. Johnson's research interests, are concerned with the application of advanced computing technologies, particularly artificial intelligence and interactive multimedia, to problems in education and training. His recent research has focused on technology for "guidebots," or animated pedagogical agents that facilitate human learning. He is particularly interested in the potential of animated agents to provide ongoing support for the learning process, to enhance student motivation, and to facilitate collaborative learning as well as one-on-one tutoring. Dr. Johnson is president of the International Artificial Intelligence in Education Society and program co-chair of the 2002 International Joint Conference on Autonomous Agents and Multi-Agent Systems.
