His name means in Sanskrit 'Axe-Ram', and he is the nemesis of the Kshatriyas. In the Ramayana, Book I, Chapters 74-76, he appears and tells his story to Rama and Sita and the party gathered for their wedding. Here is the account in Ralph Griffith's translation (1870-74).
