Chaitanya (1485-1527) was a Bengali Brahmin who preached devotional love (bhakti) for Krishna. His message tended to cut across caste and religious lines, as the Imperial Gazetteer makes clear. Here's an account of a devotional song or kirtan performance with songs about Chaitanya that was attended by Gandhi in Calcutta in 1925.
