Using Social Bookmarking Tools to Create Research Guides

Subject librarians compile research guides containing numerous resources useful for students writing papers. The research guides are typically composed of links or bookmarks to important resources and can overlap over related research guides. In addition, research guides can get lengthy and benefit from a simple taxonomy to keep bookmarks categorized. One method to control and manage links is using a social bookmarking tools such as del.icio.us, which offers a simple method for tagging any bookmark.

The process works like this: after getting an account with del.icio.us, post any bookmark to your account and tag it using the taxonomy of choice. Multiple tags allow a bookmark to be part of multiple sets of links. A set of links is called a link roll.
