What Campus Leaders Need to Know About MOOCs

A recent EDUCAUSE Executive Briefing, entitled What Campus Leaders Need to Know About MOOCs, covers the basic issues around massive open online courses (MOOCs). The three-page briefing describes how MOOCs work; the current trend of featuring courses from disciplines that lend themselves to quantitative assessment; and the reliance on peer review and support, away from instructor engagement due the large numbers of students. The briefing also discusses the "value proposition" for MOOCs and potential business models that universities should consider as they look beyond brand extension. In the paper, MOOCs are described as mostly following a traditional pedagogy (video lectures, readings, quizzes), but this is a fertile area for exploration and experimentation.
