Marc Freedman
In 1997, Marc Freedman founded Civic Ventures (later renamed Encore.org), an incubator of programs aimed at tapping older Americans to help solve significant social problems in America. The original charge of Civic Ventures was to oversee the development of Experience Corps, a program Freedman had co-designed and co-founded with Dr. Linda Fried (with input from John Gardner). Civic Ventures, based in San Francisco, continued to oversee the program nationally when, in 2004 and 2005, Fried sought funding from the National Institutes of Health for a five-year study of Baltimore Experience Corps.
