Podcasts

Podcasting is a method of publishing media to the web that includes a subscription option. New "episodes" can be made available automatically through an RSS feed. Podcasting consists of publishing XML files which contain references to media (called "enclosures") to a website. Podcast aggregators (iTunes) then read these XML files and download all the linked enclosures.

Subscribing to Feeds

You will need iTunes to subscribe to the podcast. You can choose to listen to your podcast lectures on your computer using iTunes software or you can set your iPod preferences to copy your podcasts from iTunes to your iPod. If you use another type of MP3 player or podcasting software, subscribe to the feed manually.

If you do not have iTunes or it needs updating, download the free software: iTune Download.

Understanding the icons

The subscription icons used on this site differ slightly to signal the different types of podcasts available. Some events will have multiple podcasts, such as a video and an audio podcast. The table below will help you make the appropriate selection.

Audio Podcast Audio podcast. Left side: One-click subscribe in iTunes; Right side: RSS feed.

Audio Podcast Enhanced Audio podcast. Left side: One-click subscribe in iTunes; Right side: RSS feed.

Video Podcast Video podcast. Left side: One-click subscribe in iTunes; Right side: RSS feed.

Video Podcast Enhanced video podcast. Left side: One-click subscribe in iTunes; Right side: RSS feed.

An enhanced podcast will include chapter markers for easier navigation. On some audio podcasts, it will also include images to accompany the chapter markers.
