Biography: Mike Spain

Mike Spain was named associate editor at the Times Union in 2007. He holds a degree in journalism from St. Bonaventure University and has worked in news for over 30 years. Spain joined the Knickerbocker News, a defunct afternoon newspaper in Albany, in 1978, and worked there as a reporter and city editor until the “Knick” merged with the Times Union in 1988. He served as the paper’s assistant managing editor—where he at various times oversaw newsroom technology, the copy desk, and the photo and art departments. As associate editor, Spain oversaw departmental administration, personnel, and technology. In 2007, he was the president of the New York State Associated Press Association.
