Biography: PatrickGauen


Patrick E. Gauen is editor of the public safety reporters who specialize in covering police, court, fire-rescue, EMS, disaster, and personal safety issues at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch .

He also is columnist for the Illinois edition of the Post-Dispatch and a panelist on Metrotalk, a weekly cable TV commentary show produced by Lewis and Clark Community College in Godfrey, IL. He formerly wrote a quarterly column for Illinois Issues , a political magazine produced by the University of Illinois, and for 10 years taught a journalism course at Washington University in St. Louis.

Gauen began his news career in 1969 at the Collinsville (IL) Herald . He left in 1978 to be a reporter for the old St. Louis Globe-Democrat , rising to become its managing editor in 1984-85. He moved to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in 1985, working as reporter, columnist, political correspondent, and Illinois political correspondent. He won various awards from the Illinois Press Association, United Press International, the Illinois State Medical Society, the Missouri Association for Social Welfare, Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis, and others.
