Janet McNichols began working for the Post-Dispatch as a freelancer in 1998. She held a degree in journalism from Washington University in St. Louis. She worked at Anheuser-Busch, Inc. for 26 years, and produced an employee newsletter for several of them. She also planned company sponsored events and organized employee charitable projects.

McNichols was a world traveler and photographer and visited many countries including India, Mexico, Peru, Germany, Turkey, Egypt, Tunisia, and numerous others, all with a camera and notebook in hand.
